What is Home Base?

Home Base is a statewide, instructional improvement system and student information system for teachers, students, parents and administrators. Teachers will be able to use Home Base to access student data and to access teaching and learning resources. Students will be able to access their assignments, grades and learning activities. Parents will be able to view their child's attendance and progress, and administrators can monitor data on students, teachers and schools. Home Base puts data and resources at the users' fingertips, and does so with single sign-on access to the integrated system made up of the following components: Learner Profile and Student Information; Standards & Curriculum; Instructional Design: Practice & Resources; Assessment; Data Analysis & Reporting; and Professional Development & Educator Evaluation.

New: Math Assessment Item Types: Gridded Response
Mathematics assessments in Grades 5 through 8 and the Algebra I/Integrated I End-of-Course assessment comprise multiple-choice items and approximately 20 percent gridded-response items. A gridded response item requires the student to record a numerical answer into a field rather than select an answer from several choices. There are guideline documents and examples posted on the testing website at http://www.ncpublicschools.org/accountability/testing/.

Look for the heading, “Guidelines, Practice and Examples for Math Gridded Response Items” and you will find four documents to download. You can find additional examples of new online item types in the Online Assessment Tutorial (http://go.ncsu.edu/nctdemo).

Released test forms also may be used to acquaint students with the new item types. Released test forms for 2012-13 are available in an online assessment version and in a paper-and-pencil version. Online released forms and Online Assessment Tutorial forms are presented in the same interactive environment as the actual online assessment and are available athttp://www.ncpublicschools.org/accountability/testing/releasedforms.

Honors Implementation Training Schedule
Training for the Honors Level Course Rubric and Implementation Process will consist of the following components:
· An overview webinar on April 16
· Recorded video presentations for each content area available by mid-April
· Two general Question & Answer (Q & A) webinars focused on the course rubric and review process on May 2 and May 8
· Six Q & A webinars each focusing on a specific content area during the month of May

The English Language Arts (ELA) Section of NCDPI announces a wonderful opportunity for classroom teachers to deeply explore the ELA Common Core State Standards. Teachers will participate in professional development and work with DPI Consultants in creating lessons aligned with the Common Core.

There will be two regional sessions: one held in the West and one in the East.

Home Base Updates

Scoring Module for Elementary and Middle School Common Exams Released

The Department of Public Instruction has released the scoring module for the elementary and middle school Common Exams. The module begins with an introduction to Common Exams and the State's educator effectiveness model before splitting into content-specific sections for science and social studies. Educators who complete the module will be able to access certificates of completion for the different sections.

Users do need to have an NC Education account to access the module, but enrollment in the course is not required. After logging in at https://center.ncsu.edu/nc/, search for "Common Exams." The direct link for the module is

NC Education Online Modules

The NCDPI released nine new online modules (Phase II Modules) as a means of providing professional development that is flexible and can be used by districts and charter school teams in ways that best suit their needs in June 2012. Combined with the six Phase I Modules released in June 2011, there are a total of 15 NCDPI modules available through NC Education. To access the modules, please visit https://center.ncsu.edu/nc/course/category.php?id=33281 and click on the links under Professional Development. Contact your local data managers for username and password information. First time users or non-LEA educators must first create an NC Education account. Click the “Login” link and follow the steps.

North Carolina Teacher Standards and Evaluation Process: Facilitated Course for Teachers
Two more sections of the six week, facilitator-led online course designed for teachers on the North Carolina Teacher Standards and Evaluation Process are now open for registration.. This course provides an in-depth look at the North Carolina Professional Teaching Standards and will help teachers understand their role in the new evaluation process and deepen their understanding of the six professional teaching standards.

The course is available at no cost to North Carolina teachers and will be facilitated by DPI professionals. It will take approximately 20 hours to complete over a period of six weeks, and teachers will earn 2 CEUs upon completion. The course is completely online, with participants having the ability to work flexibly, though there will be weekly deadlines and the course will start and end on scheduled dates.

The course is hosted by LearnNC. Teachers can go to http://www.learnnc.org/lp/pages/7698 to register for the course. Registration is now open for the January and February sections. There is a limit of 35 participants per section.

The online versions of the End-of-Course Assessments of Algebra I/Integrated I, English II and Biology and the NCEXTEND2 Assessments of Algebra I/Integrated I, English II,and Biology released forms are now available at http://www.ncpublicschools.org/accountability/testing/releasedforms. On the website you will find a chart that includes the online version and the paper-and-pencil versions of the 2012-13 released forms.

IIS Becomes Home Base

Imagine that you come to work each day, go to your computer or other device and log in one time to access all of the technology-based tools that you need in your work for and with students each day. That would be one log-in for tasks such as attendance and grades, instructional resources, digital textbooks and digital storage for student work and other items. Imagine that the data side of your technology tools would connect to the instructional side of your tools, better enabling you to target materials to meet the specific needs of each student.

That is the goal of Home Base, North Carolina's comprehensive instructional improvement system that will include both instructional resources and also PowerSchool, the replacement for NC WISE. Home Base is the new name for what was formerly known as the Instructional Improvement System (IIS). The Home Base website is now availableatwww.ncpublicschools.org/homebase.

Connecting with Our 21st Century Learners

10 hours / 1.0 CEU
Today's students will face challenges our generation has yet to imagine. This module focuses on ensuring that every student is ready to meet those challenges. The [[#|21st Century]] Skills Framework developed by the Partnership for 21st Century Skills helps to guide this discussion. Participants observe and analyze model lessons to identify 21st century skills and methods of teaching them, design a lesson incorporating 21st century skills and tools, and collaborate with colleagues to critique lessons developed by other participants.

North Carolina School Executive Standards and Evaluation Process

10 hours / 1.0 CEU
The North Carolina Principal and Assistant Principal Evaluation Process is based on the North Carolina School Executive Standards. These standards have been developed as a guide for principals and assistant principals as they continually reflect upon and improve their effectiveness as leaders throughout their [[#|careers]]. The standards serve as an important tool for principals and assistant principals as they consider their growth and development as executives leading schools in the 21st century. The main responsibility of principals and assistant principals is to create aligned systems of leadership throughout the school and its community.

Understanding Young Student Behavior in the Classroom

5 hours / 0.5 CEU
This module is for preschool through grade 5 teachers. The module will serve as a tool to assist teachers to develop an enhanced awareness of behavioral health issues in young students and extend that knowledge to foster long-term connectivity and academic achievement for all students, decrease the dropout rates, and ultimately increase North Carolina's graduation rates.

Introduction to Data Literacy

4 hours / 0.4 CEU
This module provides an introduction to data literacy. Both teacher and principal perspectives are included. It includes information on types of data, strategies for analyzing and understanding data, and processes for determining how these can influence instructional practices. In order to design effective instruction and learning environments, educators need to determine what learners know, and effectively use evidence collected. This module aims to provide learning experiences that develop or enhance abilities to find, evaluate, and use data to inform instruction.

Digital Literacies in the K–12 Classroom

12 hours / 1.2 CEU
Students need continual guidance in building digital literacy, and teachers need continually to reflect on how best to provide that guidance—and to refine their own skills. Just as basic literacy—reading and writing—must be a part of teaching and learning in every content area, so must digital literacy. This module offers a sound and thorough grounding in digital literacy as it pertains to the classroom—or of digital literacies, as the title of the module says, for there are many ways of thinking about digital literacy.

Literacy in History/Social Studies, Science and Technical Subjects

3 hours / 0.3 CEU
This introductory module defines literacy in the disciplines. Learners will receive an overview of the connections between the North Carolina Essential Standards and the Common Core State Standards for Literacy in History/Social Studies, Science and Technical Subjects. They will then have guided practice examining, discussing, and creating learning activities for their students that integrate the North Carolina Essential Standards and the Common Core Literacy Standards for disciplines in grades 6–12.
